Radiofrequency multipole traps: Tools for spectroscopy and dynamics of cold molecular ions
نویسنده
چکیده
Multipole radiofrequency ion traps are a highly versatile tool to study molecular ions and their interactions in a well-controllable environment. In particular the cryogenic 22-pole ion trap configuration is used to study ion-molecule reactions and complex molecular spectroscopy at temperatures between few Kelvin and room temperatures. This article presents a tutorial on radiofrequency ion trapping in multipole electrode configurations. Stable trapping conditions and buffer gas cooling, as well as important heating mechanisms, are discussed. In addition, selected experimental studies on cation and anion-molecule reactions and on spectroscopy of trapped ions are reviewed. Starting from these studies an outlook on the future of multipole ion trap research is given. Submitted to: J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Phys. Radiofrequency multipole traps 2

About the dynamics and thermodynamics of trapped ions
This tutorial introduces the dynamics of charged particles in a radiofrequency trap in a very general manner to point out the differences between the dynamics in a quadrupole and in a multipole trap. When dense samples are trapped, the dynamics is modified by the Coulomb repulsion between ions. To take into account this repulsion, we propose to use a method, originally developed for particles i...
متن کاملA New Technique for the Calculation of Colliding Vortex Rings
The present study involves a novel computational technique, regarding simultaneous use of the pseudo particle method, Poisson integral method and a special-purpose computer originally designed for molecular dynamics simulations (MDGRAPE-3). In the present calculations, the dynamics of two colliding vortex rings have been studied using the vortex method. The present acceleration technique allows...
متن کاملInternal state thermometry of cold trapped molecular anions.
Photodetachment spectroscopy of OH(-) and H(3)O(2)(-) anions has been performed in a cryogenic 22-pole radiofrequency multipole trap. Measurements of the detachment cross section as a function of laser frequency near threshold have been analysed. Using this bound-free spectroscopy approach we could demonstrate rotational and vibrational cooling of the trapped anions by the buffer gas in the mul...
متن کاملCharacterization of Ion Dynamics in Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations
Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation (SLIM) represent a novel class of ion optical devices based upon electrodes patterned on planar surfaces, and relying on a combined action of radiofrequency and DC electric fields and specific buffer gas density conditions. Initial experimental studies have demonstrated the feasibility of the SLIM concept. This report offers an in-depth consideration of ...
متن کاملStudies of Interaction between Propranolol and Human Serum Albumin in the Presence of DMMP by Molecular Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics Simulation
The interaction between propranolol (PROP) and human serum albumin (HSA) was studied in the presence of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). DMMP is usually considered as a simulant for chemical warfare agents (CWAs). For this purpose fluorescence quenching, resonance light scattering (RLS), synchronous, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were emplo...
